When Can I Sleep Train My Baby?

One of the hardest things for new parents is the realization that they may never get a good night’s sleep again, or so it seems. While sleep deprivation can be extremely challenging for new parents to deal with, sleep training is a viable option that can help you and your little one both get the sleep that you need. If you are a new parent and wondering when you can start to sleep train your baby, consider the following:

What Is Sleep Training?

Sleep training is the process of teaching your baby how to sleep, and helping your baby to develop healthy sleep habits. It is also the process of creating a sense of independence in your child, which allows your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep without constant soothing and attention from you. This can be wonderful for both parents and children, who very much need all the sleep they can get. Sleep is a learned skill and like almost all learned skills, some learn it very quickly and others need dedicated effort and time to learn how to sleep well. Do not despair if your baby has a hard time learning how to sleep, with some consistent effort (and professional sleep training guidance if needed), your little one will be sleeping well in no time.

When Can I Sleep Train My Baby?

It is recommended that before you start sleep training your baby, you speak with an expert. That being said, it is not recommended that you try to sleep train a newborn. Newborn babies are unable to produce melatonin, and have not yet developed circadian rhythms which aid in the production of sleep hormones and establishing the sleep-wake cycle. What’s more, newborn babies need to be fed often, and touch at this age between parent and baby is essential.

Once babies hit two to three months, they will start developing slightly more normal sleep rhythms. While full on sleep training and self-soothing methods should not yet be implemented, you can begin allowing your child to fuss or cry for a few minutes in the middle of night before attending to them, in order to see if they will fall asleep on their own.

Once your baby is around four or five months old, you can start implementing the sleep training process more seriously. This is because once a child reaches this age–unless any special circumstances exist, of course–they are usually able to go through the night without being fed, and have an easier time falling asleep when they wake in the middle of the night. This holds true for both breastfed and bottle-fed babies.
